Health

Comparatively the Havanese breed is healthy. In all breeds there are inherited health issues. What can you make sure to ensure that your Havanese is healthy? Honestly, in life for many things there are no guarantees but there are precautions that start from the time you start searching for that perfect puppy. You need to make sure you become familiar with your breeder and that they are providing quality and not quantity care. You need to ensure that their breeding stock has been tested and is healthy. Do they know the status of the puppies grandparents and great grandparents? Once you ensure your breeder has done their best and you bring that puppy home you will need to pick up where they have left off. That includes grooming, nutrition, and veterinary care. It means you are diligent when there are concerns and that you make sure you are feeding your dog the best quality food and providing them with quality water (and that may include having your water tested, filtered or the use of bottled water). It means doing the appropriate vaccines, monthly heart worm prevention and keeping them free of pests. Our young Havanese community has been vocal and concerned about the things that may affect our breed and so we discuss health, a lot! That is a good thing. If you know more about these tests than your breeder, that is a sign to run..

The following list include some health related problems that you should become aware of. In parenthesis you will find a practical method of detection. Below that you will find links to test sites and information. Every breeder should test their breeding stock and every owner should ensure they are buying from an educated responsible breeder.

Cardiac (Auscultation or Doppler if necessary)
Cataracts (Make sure you CERF annually)
Chondrodysplasia (soaped up pics and/or x-rays)
Deafness (One time BAER test)
Hip Dysplasia (X-ray & Vet Exam)
Legg Calve-Perthes (Vet Exam & X-ray)
Liver Shunt (bile acid blood test)
Patellar Luxation (i.e. slipped kneecap) (Vet Exam & X-ray)
