Training Your Havanese

The Havanese is a very intelligent animal. Yes, animal. Although, most of us consider them to be our babies and spoil them silly it is they who are training us because of their amazing intelligence. Just observe your Havanese at curious play, it is that curiosity that is a flag showing you how intelligent it truly is. In the AKC Breed Standard the word "alert" comes in. This is such a small word that was snuck in there by mentors of the past but they knew what they were doing and it is not a word to be overlooked. This "alert" breed of dog is highly intelligent. It can train you to cater to it's rumored finicky palate (where experienced breeders know if they will eat and enjoy it what you give them if you hold out). They bark, although not a yappy breed they will alert you of strangers, strange noises, and are always on a "stand-by" protective position in your home (see that is "alert" again). Yes, they are friendly and loving and that is how they wrap us around their furry paws. Even this amusing, entertaining dog needs your leadership and training. Their very cute demeanor makes them easy to spoil, so you must remember they are still dogs that become part of your pack when you bring them home and it is up to you to establish pack leadership.
